Do you require a full Category minibus training in Liverpool D1 or {D1E towing licence} minibus licence?
Not - required
If you are a volunteer driver {not receiving any payment including wages/fuel allowance/any payment in kind/not employed as a teacher or caretaker}
Yes - required
As a general rule if you passed your test before 1st January 1997 you need the 101 restriction removed so that you can earn money or drive a school minibus.

D1E Licence upgrade

If you passed your test after 1st January 1997 you do not have the Category D1 entitlement on your licence.
However, you may drive if:
a) you drive for a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
b) you are over 21
c) have held a car licence for 2 years
d) are providing your serevice on a voluntary basis {you are not employed by the school/company}
e) the minibus is under 3.5 tonnes








School teachers
If you are a teacher where you are asked/volunteer to drive the school minibus, you will need a full 'D1' minibus licence. {If you passed your car driving test before 1997 you already have D1 on you driving licence however you will see a 101 restriction which needs to be removed in order to leagally drive a school minibus. How to remove the 101 restriction By passing the PCV minibus Category D1 Theory/Hazard perception & Driving test.

Are teachers classed as volunteers
If you are paid as a teacher this is classed as reward or. This needs a full 'D1' licence.
If you drive out of school hours you are still classed as teaching or supervising and acting as a teacher, this could be classed as driving 'during school hours'.
Also please check with your insurance company regarding the use of non - full 'D1' licence holders to see if cover will still be in force.
Responsibility
It's the driver's & schools responsibility to ensure the safety of the children that are being transported. If an accident causing damage or injury or loss of life were to happen then the driver is at risk of prosecution.

How to gain your provisional PCV D1 licence

1. Fill out D2 & D4 forms {your doctor usually charges a fee for completing the medical D4 form}
